Making music with water

This week we had some fun with our making music with water science experiment. We lined up the glass jars next to each other and filled them with different amounts of water. The food colouring was added just so the children could see the water levels clearly. The first glass had just a little water while the last jar was almost full, the ones in between  had slightly more than the last. We explored the following:

 What’s happening?

Each of the glasses will have a different tone when hit with the pencil.  The glass with the most water will have the lowest tone, while the glass with the least water will have the highest. Small vibrations are made when you hit the glass, this creates sound waves which travel through the water. More water means slower vibrations and a deeper tone. The children also spoke about the amount of air in each glass contributing to the sounds.

We then played ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’. Try this at home and question your children.

Assembly

Just a reminder that 8W is performing at Friday’s assembly. The children have learnt a Japanese song and will be singing with Mrs Fisher’s class. The assembly will start at 2.15.

Text to Text Connections

We have been very busy during our Guided Reading sessions learning how to make Text to Text connections. Text to Text connections are when we compare the text we are reading to other similar texts. These texts could be books or visual texts such as a movie or TV show. Using this strategy helps us to make meaning of what we are reading. We have been working on the concepts of same and different.

We have compared the Hippopotamus book series and this week we have been using this strategy with Julia Donaldson’s books (Gruffalo, Gruffalo’s Child etc.). Please take the time to chat with your child about what we have been learning. Come in and have a look at our Hippo book and learning display.
