We have been busy

Hi Everyone,

Wow nearly the the end of week four already! We have been very busy.

In writing we have been looking at the structure of a narrative- characters, settings, problems and solutions. We have also looked at what the purpose of a narrative is. The purpose of a narrative is to entertain the reader.

In Maths we have been learning about measurement. We have covered length and weight.

Students have been exposed to the following language: length, end, end-to end, side-by-side, long, longer than, longest, short, shorter than, shortest, high, higher than, highest, tall, taller than, tallest, low, lower than, lowest, the same as, near, nearer, far, further, close, closer.

Students have been exposed to the following language: mass, matter, heavy, heavier, heaviest, light, lighter, lightest, about the same as, hard to push, hard to pull.

Our inquiry topic this term is ‘Change is all around us’. We have started looking at what materials things are made of. Today we investigated how wool is made. Joe the scientist will be visiting us again near the end of the term.

Yesterday we participated in two events, National Simultaneous Story time and Wheelinet.

National Simultaneous Story time is when preschools, childcare, schools and public libraries read the same book at the same time. This year’s book was ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’. We discussed the importance of perseverance, having a growth mindset and being stuck in the learning pit. Ask your children what happened in the story. Last year 3600 locations across Australia participated in this event.

Wheelinet gave the children an opportunity to feel what is is like to be in a wheelchair. While they all had fun learning how to manoeuvre the wheelchair and throw the ball, they also understood that having a permanent disability was not a laughing matter. This incursion helped them to build some empathy and understanding.

Last week we had the Living Safely with Pets incursion. The children learnt how to observe the body language of an angry dog, and not to approach it. They also learnt the safe way to approach an unknown dog.

Japanese Picnic

Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder that tomorrow is the Japanese picnic and the Bento boxes need to come to school with their lunches in them. I have name labels that I will stick on them in the morning as you come in. The students are encouraged to wear the Japanese colours of red and white.
Thanks
Karina and Isabelle
